Grapefruit: so good it is great - Friday, July 04
Grapefruit does more than zap our taste buds with its citrusy flavor. The red and pink versions of this plump fruit contain disease-fighting nutrients like vitamin C and lycopene, which help boost immune function and target free radicals that can contribute to cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Grapefruit contains pectin, too, a good source of fiber that helps lower bad cholesterol. It may also reduce the risk of kidney stones thanks to its pH-balancing effects on the urinary tract system, and it may aid the liver in detoxifying harmful carcinogens.
Looking to incorporate a little grapefruit into your diet?
Upgrade your salsa. Add grapefruit to your salsa for a zesty tang.
Top your salad. Throw diced grapefruit atop a salad to kick up its flavor.
Switch your juice. Replace your orange juice with a glass of grapefruit juice (it retains some of the highest antioxidant levels of all fruit juices).
One precaution: If you’re taking certain pharmaceuticals like statins, anti-depressants, or calcium blockers, grapefruit compounds can interfere with your body’s ability to break down the drugs. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any possible side effects associated with your medication.
