The right walking technique can maximize performance and minimize aches and pains. Try these tips:

  • Stand tall. Keep your shoulders back, head high, abdominal muscles gently pulled in, and pelvis slightly tucked under.

  • Think heel toe. Roll through the heel to the ball of your foot, and then push off with your toes.

  • Avoid over-striding. If you increase speed, take more steps per minute instead of longer strides. This enables a powerful push off your back foot to propel you forward.

  • Don’t forget your arms. Bend your elbows at a right angle and keep them close to your sides; swing your arms from the shoulder. Allow your torso to twist naturally with each step.

Keep technique in mind as you walk 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
