Like many transformations, changing the way you eat can be challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Dig deep to find the commitment, time, and patience you’ll need to be successful — not just for a few weeks while your New Year’s resolution is fresh, but for the long haul.

A healthier you is well within your reach. Keep these tips in mind to make your healthy eating habits last:

  • Retrain your palate. If you haven’t been eating healthfully for long, you might be more accustomed to sugary, salty, and fatty foods. Just as professionals perfect their skills, you’ll also work to train your palate. In time, you’ll become attuned to — and even amazed by — more subtle flavors.

  • Aim for diversity. Jump-start your nutritional perspective. Buy a new cookbook or take a cooking class, try new fruits and vegetables, and stock your pantry with a variety of healthy ingredients.

  • Take one day at a time. Each day, choose nutrient-rich foods that keep you within your goals. Remember that eating right isn’t something you do now and then, but that approaching each day on its own will help you to succeed.

  • Go easy on yourself. It’s okay to treat yourself once in a while. Just be sensible with your portions and enjoy it fully.
